Antoinette (Toni) Scriptunas, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend, succumbed to her battle with Alzheimer's on December 17, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Toni was born on October 21, 1925, in Stickney,W.Va., in Raleigh County, to John and Mary Tallarico. She is preceded in death by both parents; her loving husband and father to her children, Vincent Scriptunas; two sisters, Rose Weiss Miragliotta and Fannie Farra; three brothers, Pat, Frank and Sam Tallarico. Toni is survived by her four sons, Walter (Vivien), Vince (Susan), John and Tom; three grandchildren, Walter II, Samantha and William. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews that she loved dearly, Debbie Hill, her close friend and caregiver, Carolyn Jordan, loving caregiver and an abundance of friends, who she would refer to as her extended family. Toni's family would like to extend their gratitude to the hospice staff and team that cared for Toni in your final days. Toni graduated from Charleston Catholic High School in 1944. Since, she has been a living testimony to what it means to have a servant's heart. She is a heroine among all who knew her—from her pioneering efforts to start a twin mothers club, her countless hours assisting the elderly to appointments and the grocery store, all the way to cooking for her family faithfully every Sunday. Hebrews 13:2 reads, "Don't forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!" There is no doubt that Toni entertained angels, and no doubt she will continue to do so in Heaven. She was a faithful volunteer at St. Francis Hospital, which honored her with a humanitarian award in 2002, a lifetime member of Sons of Italy, and a devoted member of Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart since 1941. She also worked for several years as a crossing guard to the children of Sacred Heart. On one of her several trips to Italy, Toni was honored to meet Pope St. John Paul II. Of all her travels, none rivaled the yearly trips Toni took with her best friends to her home in Cass. Here they were young girls again, doing life together. Of all things sacred and precious in this world, nothing compared to the relationships in Toni's life, and absolutely nothing compared to the love she had for her family. It is with heavy hearts and sadness that the world has to say "goodbye for now" to this extraordinary woman, but we can all carry a piece of Toni with us by living out her legacy of serving others. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, December 21, at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral with Father Bryan J, Crenwedge officiating. Viewing will be one hour prior to service at the church. Entombment will follow in Tyler Mt.
